December 11, 1862
Old Point Dec 11th 1862
Dear Brother Henry
it is
with much pleasure that
I seat myself to write you
a few lines in answer to
your most welcomed letter
which I received yesterday
and you cant imagine how
glad I was to hear from home
once more and to hear you
you was as well as you was
I was sorry to hear that Pa
and Adelbert was complaining
with the sore throat but I
hope they are better now I am
well and enjoiing myself first
rat and I hope this will find
you the same I like souldier
-ing first rate it suits me well
I am at the hospital yet but how
long I shall remain hear is more
than I know but I shall some time
I hope for it is a good place and nuthing
to do, the fleet has gone and left us
boys behind but where they have gone
is more than I know or care but
but when they land I expect they
will cut dads ass with a shaving
it is Gen Bankses expedition
you will see something about it
in the paper I sent you. I got the
socks that our folks sent me yesterday
they come safe and I got a letter
yesterday that ma wrote Dec 4th I
your letter and mas the same time
I have not received the letter nor
paper that you spoke of that ma
directed to Washington has Pa ever
received the letter that I sent
that check in I have never received
any answer from it did Dan write
write that I was destitut of socks if
he did he wrote that that want so
when I was took sick and got to the
hospital they too all of ___ my cloths
but my coat off to wash and one
pair of my socks was left in my
knapsack durty and the pair of
sockes that I had on was clean but
they would not let me keep them
so that left me without any and
dan had a plenty so I borrowed a
pair of socks of him I have got 2
good pare of socks now I have not
used all of the yarn that Abey give
me and I have not use any of that
that I brought from home I thank
you very much for that turkey you
eat for me I will try and do as much
for you sometime I should like to
be up home verry much this winter
but it haint so to be no I have not
received a letter from Uncle George
___ Chesebro and Frank Gilbert is
on the boat they are all right Joseph
Gilbert is ___ a___ high they say cant live
P C Tutle esq is all rotten he dont stur
enough to air his ass he lays a bed
all of the time but when he sturs the
bedcloths we have to hoist the windows
to breath there haint one that likes him
they call him steve and call steve his
boy he says that he is going to act as
captain and Capt Tucker is a going
be his water I guess that Sidney will
make business ake a fidleing as bad as
Hoxie will teaching school I guess that
foxie will do as well playing on the ___
as sidney will playing on the fiddle
I guess they will make a good band
___ I guess Uncle Stephen tells a good
many big stories he can get his discharge
any time when he has a mind to aply
for it yes I guess if you was hear we could
make the rebbels skedadle tell foxie to
brake the morgan right have you got
the childers broke I bought 2 pounds of
sugar yesterday and and put some water
in it and melted it and made some molasses
I had to give 14 cents for muscovada an 17 for
loaf molasses is 25 cents a quart and poor at
that I wrote a letter home last Sunday and I shall
answer the last one I got yesterday before
long you know the ___ that choked for Warren
the winter we had the lawsuit down to the school
house well he is in our company he had the
measles and got better and went out doors and
took cold and has got the typhoid fever
well I have wrote all that I have got room
this time so I must close write as
soon as you get this this from your

you cant fetch it to me and I will read it
for you
