December 13, 1862
Fortress Munro Dec 13th 1862
Dear Father and Mother
It is with much
pleasure that I seat myself once more pen in
hand to write you a few lines in answer to
your most prescious letter which I received
yesterday and you dont know how glad I was to
hear from home once more I am well and enjoiing
myself as well as I could ask for but I hope this will
find you all well Ma I was verry sorry to hear you
was so much unwell but I hope this will find you
well again. I have not been out doors for 3 weakes the
reason of it is because they have not brought back my
my cloths yet I dont know what the reason of it is
but -------------- I haint the only one that haint
got their cloths yes I have got off of that darned old boat
there wont but one lows got on me that I could find
there haint no lice hear yes I break out some but it haint
the same braking out that I had last winter there
is once in a while a great blotch comes out on me
and it itches pretty bad Dave Loomis and John T. Fren/ch
has got the regular itch they are ointing with brimstone
and greece Dave has not got a box of things since he
has been hear no dont send a box of things ------
for I dont know how long I shall stay hear we have
not heard a word from the regiment yet Jud has not
had a letter from Uncle Steve yet I cant see what the
reason is for he said he should write to him often
The hospital furnishes us with cloths or that is
with a shirt and drawers There was a swordfish killed
hear day before yesterday that measured over twelve feet
in length he weighed over 350 pound his sword was
3 and a 1/2 feet long and the fin on his ____ was over 2
feet wide that was larger than any fish that I
ever saw down in the old Chenang There is
from 25 to 30 boats out on the bay catching
oisters There is a large bed of them close by hear
I got a letter from you the same day that I got Henrys
so I will answer them both at a time I never got
the paper you spoke of that Lewis gave you I got a
letter from Uncle John yesterday I shall answer it before
long yes I think it is darned mean about that
wood that Purdy cut he made a pretty good winters
work of it after all I guess you will look out how
you trust any more Purdys do you know what he
is doing this winter how come that wilcox back
has he got his discharge or did he run away you wanted
to know whether the captain ever had the measles
yes he has had them he come to see us everr day while
he was hear but he cant come now I guess that
I shall keep what money I have got for no knowing
when we shall get any more pay I dont know
what made me so hoarse I had a verr hard cold
and I guess that was it there was quite a num/ber
of the boys that was just so did henry get the paper
I sent him There is a good deal of war news now
Pa I think you done pretty well on your beef this fall
I will tell you who is lef behind sick out of Co G

and now I will tell you who was left to Baltimore Garret

Amasa id dead and one of the Murphys has got his
discharge and I dont know but both I cant think
of anyone els now but I believe there is more
well I swar I cant think of much to write to
day The head hospital is the Ladyes Seminary
The girls from all over the United States come hear
to school it is a nice building and then there is
lots of small howses all around and they are all name/d
of but I dont know all of the names I am in the
brown cottage not mor that 5 rods from the Ches
apeake shore wher I can set by the window and watch
the steamboats as they pass out and in the bay There
was a briggade come in hear on steamers night
before last and went out yesterday morning and there
was a lot more souldiers hear this morning
Alberto Fisk bought a can of preserves together
yesterday they tasted the most like home of anything
I have had since I come from home They was preserved/pares
I hope you will get out of letter paper again so
you will have to take a sheet of fools cap everry
time you write to me for I like to have you
write long letters Ma any questions that any of
you want to ask me you must ask and I will
answer them all that is if I can I like to have you
ask questions for then I can have something to write
back. yes I know there is some folks that can
play their cards pretty well but there never was a
smart man yet but what his match couln't be found
somewhere but they played their cards a good while
there was lots of boys from stockbridge in our Co. that
knows all about the Purdys that live out there
and the know Charles and Ann They say they
are the toughest nation there is around stock bridge
They say Skip stole over 50 dollars work of boots on night
What is the matter with Josphine that she is so
weak I have just heard a rooster cro is the first one I
have heard since I left York state I guess this will be
a long letter enough for you you must read it if you
can and if you cant come and bring it to me and I will read
it for you well I have wrote all that I can think
of this time so I must close write as soon as you get this
direct to Chesapeake General Hospital Fortress

socks they come safe and I guess the mittens
would ___tice I should think had got in to big business
Jud haint wrote home since he has bee hear
