letters.
February 14, 1863
Quarantine, Feb. 14th, 1863
Dear Father & Mother
It is with a verry
great degree of pleasure that I
once more seat myself to write
you a few lines to let you know
how I get along I am not verry
well I have been quite down to
heel for the past 2 or 3 days but
I am some better now I have
had the diarrhoeah I have got a
verry bad cough and it has settled
on my longues. but I hope this
will find you all well and in-
joiing your selves. I received
your verry prescious letter of
Jan. 12th this morning and
you cant imagine with what
joy I received it.
for I found out that I had not
got so far from home but what
I could hear from there once
in a while and I hop that
you can get my letters so you
can hear from me once in
a while I hope and pray that
you have got the 2 letters that I
wrote before since I have been
hear so you wont worry about me
We are on land now each man
does his own cooking or cook by
squads of 8. we are having as
good a time as can be expected
consiterating the place we are
in we are in hopes we shant
have to stay hear much longer
our reg. is calculating to go into
battle before long they have got
so near the rebbels that there haint
nuthing but a bay between them
they are all in good health &
spirits. Nathan Sampson got
a letter from Uncle Steve this
morning he and Dan both
sent their best respects to me
they have never wrote to me
Jud is verry sick he has
got the mumps he took cold
and they settled he is having a tough
time. There was a man died hear
with the small pox last night
it was a man by the name of
Beckwith he was from Podunck
perhaps uncle John knows him.
I got a letter this morning that
you wrote to me Nov 22d. it went
to the reg. and they sent it to
me from there I got a letter from
Stephen Coon this morning
so that made 3. they are the first
I have received in 5 weeks.
I should think the young folks
was having a gay old time up
there this winter well let them
cut around if they want to
my turn will come by and by
I hope. I wish that I had a fishline
and some fishhooks hear now
for there is a first rate good place
to fish down hear in the Mississippi
and then I could have some fish
to eat we cant get any milk
down hear oisters is worth $1 abushel
oringes 50 cents a hundread whiskey
is worth $2.50 a galon and tobacco $2.
a pound. so come __________________
I wish I had the old gun down hear
I would shoot black birds enough
for one good stew they are firstrate
cooked. we haint heard a word from
Dave Loomis since he left I guess
he will be to home before you get
this. I heard that Ambrose Sandurs
come down to see frank and the
old doctor would not let him see
him. Capt. Tucker haint dead
our Orderly Sargent is dead his
name was Nickles. how did
Elder Todd make out to his donation
who for gods sake was S.H. Yorks
lady and who was H.G. Coons
lady I would like to know. I should
think it was a pretty place to play
play to a donation what did Henry
Emily and Irene have a good time
down there. I have got so far away
from home that I haint going to write
to any one only home/over 2,000 miles away
well I will finish on this I
guess I lent my jack knife the other
day and he broke the blade into in
the middle he said he would pay
me for it when he got his money
so I am without a knife now.
take it among a lot of souldiers it
is the worst place to beg and borough
that there is in the world always
some one wanting something.
Tell aunt Amanda that she dont
know the whole of it. if you should
send the whole of your letters to
Chesapeake General hospital
they would send them all on to me
for they would be olbliged to direct to

and it will come to me any where
in the U.S. that is if I am with
the reg
my clothes wear good they are all
whole yet I haint had to do any
patching yet. peach trees are in bloom
hear and they hang full of oringes to
they are ripe allmost the year round
there haint many lemons down
round right hear I haint seen
but a few. well I have wrote about
all I can think of this time so I must
close I dont beleive you can mak out
what this is for it is a mixed up
mess. I wish that I had a book
so that I could keep a diary but
I cant get one hear. I shall write
to Henry in a few days I am
expecting a letter from him before
long. well write as soon as you
get this wrall of the news write
a long letter for I want to know
what you are all a doing. this from
