February 25, 1863
Quarantine Feb. 25. 1863
Dear Father and Mother
It is with a great
deal of pleasure that I once more
take my pen in hand to let you
know how I get along I am not
verry well but I am so that I keep
jogging but I hope this will find
you all well and enjoiing good health
the climate down hear dont agree
with me some how or other I dont
know what the reason is but it has
give me the heaves so that I cant
stand hard driving verry well it
makes me cough so It is quite
hot weather down hear now in the
daytime but the nights are quite
cool the sugar cane growers
have been plowing now for 3
weeks I suppose it is about time
for them to plant I should think
that sugar and molasses might
be cheaper hear than it is for this
is where a great deal of the sugar
raised they ask 15 cents a pound
for sugar and $ a galon for molasses
and pretty poor at that I understand
that we start for the reg this week
some time if nothing happens and
I hope and pray that we shall go
for I am tired of staying hear
for it is a low wet hole inhabited
by crockadiles frogs musquitoes
and rats there was 1 ship and 2
schooners taken from the rebels
last saturday they undertook
to run the blockade they was
all loaded with cotton they went
up by hear to Neworleans the reg
of 9 months men that ___ troop
enlisted in went up by hear the
other day they was going to join
banks I expect that banks will
strike a heavy blow before long
I expect he will make this rebells
___ tremble that is if he happens
to I dont know whether the 114 reg has
been into a battle yet or not but
they are expecting it or was the
last I heard from them. Co G is
picked out for the sharpshooters and
skermishers. Co. G has got to be an
awful co they can lay down and
hide almost anywhere when they
get into battle that is the way to
do it I shall be glad if I ever get back
to my co. I suppose that I have had
the very ___ so that I never will
have the smallpox ___ perhaps you
would like to know how much
provisions is worth down hear
flower is worth 7 1/2 dollars per barrell
meal is verry hight but I dont know
how they do sell it potatoes are 75 cts
a bushel pork $6 a hundred beef $5
a hundred rice 5 cts butter 50 cts
a pound coffee 30 cts tea 12 shilling
a pound
eggs 50 cts a dozen sweet potatoes
are worth 2 dollars a bushell the pork
and beef is salt that is all I think of
now I suppose that you will be making
sugar before you get this how I wish
I could be there to help you but I cant
I shall begin to look for a letter
from you before long it haint quite
time yet but I long for the
time I shall get one from
you my patriotism is all gone
the southern shits has taken
it all away suthern shits are
powerful Jud is well he wrote
to his mother day before yesterday
he is expecting a letter from his
daddy everry day I had a good oister
stew yesterday I had 10 cents and
had all I wanted to eat I wish that
I could eat one good meal at home
now I believe it would go good if
it wont nuthing more than pudding
and milk well I have wrote about
all that I can think of this time so I
must close write as soon as you get
this direct to Co G 114 reg N.Y.S.V.

as I get them wrote I have to get my
letter read and when a steamer comes
along it goes out the letters are mailed

a mixed up mess
