November 8, 1862
Baltimore Nov 8th 1862
Dear Parents
It is with the
greatest pleasure imaginable
that I take my pen in hand
once more to answer your
most welcomed letter of the
3d which I received last night
Oh you cant begin to think how
glad I was to hear from you
once more and to hear you was
all well and I hope and pray
will remain so I am well as
usual I have not got over my
cold yet but it is better and
hope this will find you well
and in good spirits for I am in
good spirits now we are on
the Steam boat Atlantic she
is one of the largest ocean
steamers that sails we are in
the bay at Baltimore they just
hoisted the anchor ____
she will sail this afternoon
to parts unknown to any of
the soldiers there is a fleet of
50,000 men of us all there haint
only 5000 hear in the bay
something will have to give
when we get there I suppose
you got that letter that I wrote
to Henry before you sent
that box if you did not it
will be lost for that wont
follow us but letters will
we have not got our pay yet
I have not got but 25 cents now
and I shall put my last stamp
on this letter I shall have to
stop writing pretty much now
I would like to have you send
2 or 3 postage stamps in your
next letter but dont send any
money for it may get lost
I dont believe there is 100 dollars
in this regiment among officers
and privates we had quite a
time getting on this boat we
went on board of 3 steamers
before we got one to fetch us
to this this is so large it wont
sail up to the wharf without
grounding I guess I guess Aunt Aman/da
wont come to cook for the officers
right away the cooks we have
got cook their victuals as well
as well as I can ask for it suits me
no you nead not buy me any gloves
now send my mittens they
will do for now the snow
fell about 6 inches deep yester/day
between sunrise and sunset
it is warmer today no we dont
have no liquor without we
buy it and that I haint nor
want to I shant enlist in
the navy tell Adelbert I did not
smell new leather for I had such
a cold I could not I wrote to henry
coon a good while ago I wrote to uncle
george the other day I must
keep writing while I have
anything to write with but
I will write home if I dont
write to anyone else I have not
had a letter from anyone except
from you and henry since I got one
from Grandma I did not have
any trouble in reading your
letter I wish you would write so
everry time you need not be afraid
but what I can read it you must
not think about furloughs yet
awhile for I could not get one but
if I could get one I would jump
at the chance mighty quick for I
want to see you all as bad as you
want to see me tell the young folks
they must kiss a little for me who
they are going to ______
tell Sidney he must look out how
he steps for he may run against
a snag sometime if he dont look
out how is Josephine a going have you
a paper and a him book I sent to you
Dave got his whiskey and there is both of
the boys got a box of stuff Dan lost his
cap overboard this morning and could
not get it I must close for I can get
a chance to send it to the office now
our boat is a float so good by for this
time write soon direct as before this
