Enlisted on April 25, 1861, at New York City, as a Sergeant, age 22.
On May 9, 1861, he mustered into Co. H, 5th NYSV.
He was discharged for promotion on November 28, 1862, and was
commissioned into Co. A, 165th NYSV.
He was discharged for wounds on July 26, 1865.
He was listed as wounded on June 27, 1862, at Gaines' Mill, VA (severe wound in right shoulder).
He was promoted to 1st Sergeant, July 20, 1861; to 2nd Lieutenant, September 1, 1861;
to 1st Lieutenant, July 8, 1862; to Captain, November 28, 1862 (Co. A 165th NYSV); to Major,
September 2, 1863; to Lt. Colonel, March 13, 1865 by Brevet (for Gaines' Mills, VA); to Colonel, March 13, 1865,
by Brevet (for Port Hudson, LA); to Brigadier General, March 13, 1865, by Brevet.
