Enlisted on October 1, 1861, at Elmira, NY, as a private, age 23.
On October 19, 1861, he mustered into Company D, 10th NY Cavalry.
He was mustered out on February 17, 1865, at Petersburg, VA.
He was listed as a POW, November 29, 1862, (place not stated); POW, June 29, 1864, at Stony Creek, VA. He was confined at Macon, GA & Columbia, SC.
He was wounded on June 29, 1864, at Stony Creek, VA.
He escaped on November 29, 1864, at Columbia, SC.
He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant, January 7, 1862; to Captain, February 9, 1863.
Governor of Michigan, January 1, 1901, to January 1, 1904.
