Colonel James M. Brown, 100th NYSV. Born Nov. 24, 1825, in Dundee, Scotland.
Studying medicine at Glasgow for a time, he emigrated to the US around 1844 and
settled in New Orleans. He was an assistant army surgeon during the Mexican
War; mustered out at Mackinac, Michigan. Admitted to the Michigan bar during
1851, he married a woman from Argyle, NY, in January of the following year. In
1853, he became a partner in a Chautauqua County law firm with Madison Burnell
and John F. Smith. Commissioned as captain of Company B, 72d NYSV, he resigned
that post November 5, 1861, in order to accept the colonelcy of the 100th NYSV.
Col. Brown was killed May 31, 1862, at the Battle of Seven Pines outside of
Richmond, VA, when the 100th NYSV was enveloped by a Confederate division under
General D.H. Hill. Brown's body was never recovered.

as captain of Co. D, age 32; mustered as major June 25, 1861; killed in action
at Chancellorsville, VA, on May 3, 1863.

Sgt. Charles Sturdevant, Co. K, 49th NYSV. Joined at Jamestown Aug., 1861, age
33; returned to ranks March, 1862; died of lung congestion at Bakersville, MD,
Sept. 30, 1862.

Private (William) Harrison Sheldon, Co. A, 49th NYSV. Joined at Fredonia
August, 1861, age 21; captured Oct. 14, 1863 at Bristoe Station, VA, and never
seen again.

Private Franklin Bullock, Co. C, 112th NYSV. Joined at Cherry Creek, August,
1862, age 18; "on duty constantly till killed in battle Darbytown Road, October
27, 1864."

Major Elial Foote Carpenter, 112th NYSV. Born May 8, 1826 in Carrol, NY;
manufactured edged tools in Dexterville, NY; joined 49th NYSV Aug. 16, 1861 and
elected 2d Lt., Co. K; mustered April 1862 as 1st Lt.; returned to Chautauqua
County to recruit, and accepted Majority of 112th NYSV, Jan., 1863; led unit at
Suffolk; returned again to Chautauqua County to recruit, Dec. 1863 through
April 1864; MWIA May 16, 1864 at Procter's Creek, VA; died May 18, 1864 at
Bermuda Hundred.

1918.
Colonel Jeremiah Clinton Drake, 112th NYSV. Born April 19, 1824, in Salisbury,
Herkimer County, NY. His own poor health and financial reverses suffered by his
father allegedly forced him to abandon educational plans and go west in 1843;
he settled in Wisconsin and "engaged in trading for five years, at the same
time holding some county offices." Returning to NY, he "graduated with honor"
at Rochester University and was ordained a Baptist minister in 1852. Served as
pastor at Churchville and then Panama, NY, he was subsequently called to the
Baptist Church at Westfield. Rev. Drake raised Co. G, 49th NYSV, and led it for
one year ending Aug., 1862 when he accepted the 112th's colonlcy. Led his
regiment through the seige of Suffolk, VA, and commanded brigades during early
1864: in the 18th Corps, SC, and in the 10th Corps, FL. During the May, 1864
fighting at Bermuda Hundred, Col. Drake led a brigade in the Army of the James.
In command of the second brigade, Devens' division, XVIII Corps at Cold Harbor.
He led a bayonet charge by his four regiments on the evening of June 1, 1864,
and was mortally wounded. He died around dawn June 2d, and his body was
returned to Westfield, NY.

lawyer; Sgt. Major 19th IL Volunteers; mustered into 9th NY Cavalry at Albany,
Nov., 1861 as Major, age 23; mustered as Colonel to date May 1, 1863; MWIA June
11, 1864 at Trevilian Station, VA; died June 14, 1864; received brevet for
actions at Trevilian Station; buried at Restvale Cemetery, Seneca Falls
(section R, lot 75E).

Captain Harmon J. Cowden, Co. I, 9th NY Cavlry. Joined at Westfield Sept. 10,
1861 and mustered as captain Co. I, age 26; died of disease on steamer Elm
City in Pamunkey River, VA, May 22, 1862. (Charter document in NYS
Library, Albany.)

I, 120th NYSV July 24, 1864; mustered as 2d Lt.Feb. 20, 1865; mustered out with
company June, 1865; brevet captain NYSV.

112th Dec. 26, 1863; provost marshal and judge advocate at Jacksonville, FL; on
staff of General Gilmore, X Corps; mustered June 20, 1864 as Lt. Colonel 112th
NYSV; fell at Fort Fisher, NC; buried in Jamestown.
