Major General Edward Richard Sprigg Canby. Born in Kentucky in 1817; West
Point; Brig. Gen. March 1862; sent to NYC in July, 1863 to quell draft riots
and enforce conscription laws; Maj. Gen. May, 1864; wounded by guerillas;
received surrender of Kirby Smith; Brig. Gen. in US Army 1866; killed by Modoc
Indians while trying to arrange a peace treaty, 1873; post named in memoriam.
