He mustered into the 8th NYS Militia.
He was mustered out on August 2, 1861, at New York City.
On November 23, 1861, he was commissioned into Co. B, 55th NYSV.
He was discharged for promotion on September 10, 1862.
He was commissioned into the U.S. Volunteers Commissary Department.
He was mustered out on August 25, 1865.
He was listed as a POW, June 13, 1862, at White House, VA.
He was exchanged on August 28, 1862 (place not stated). (He was exchanged for John K Mitchell CS Navy.)
He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant, November 23, 1861;
to Captain, September 10, 1862 ; to Major, August 22, 1865, by Brevet.
