The Civil War Letters
of
George Arrowsmith

Although George Arrowsmith was born in the State of New Jersey in 1839, he died wearing the uniform of the New York State Volunteers. A graduate of Madison University (now Colgate University) in 1859, he enlisted in the 26th NYSV in 1861 and became Captain of Company D. He served in the U.S. Volunteers, and, in November of 1862, became Lt. Colonel of the 157th NYSV. He was mortally wounded on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
