Arlington Heights - September 9, 1862
Father
I have got some water once more I have not had
any chance to write since I left Fredericksburgh
our regiment has done some hard marching and
fighting and has won for its self a name. We were
at the Bull Run fight and on the left wing. it
was a second bull run it was an awful fight. The
grape [?] and cannister [?] mowed the men down like
sheep. our regiment badly turned out. we have
lost in Co G one first lieut., one surgeon, three
corporals shot badly. I am afraid George Dobbs is
dead. I have had more[?] Newburgh Journals marked
N T Clark. I was glad to get them the last letter
I got from you was at Culpepper. I saw Hank Davenport,
Ike Edwards and Frank Woods his arm is well, but
Charlie Edwards is gone. the grey backs have got him.
Harvey Wiley is in some hospital, but I do not know
what one it is the rest of us are well for a month
last we have not stayed twenty hours in a place. We
ought to have a rest. no more from your son
