OBITUARY NOTES.
Gen. David P. De Witt died Tuesday last in Middle-
town, N. Y., in the seventy-second year of his age. He
was born in Hoboken, N. J., July 10, 1817. He entered
West Point Military Academy in June, 1832, was
graduated and commissioned as Second Lieutenant,
Second Artillery, United States Army, in 1836. He
resigned and entered the employ of the New-York,
Lake Erie and Western Railroad. After a long serv-
ice with this company he was engaged in civil en-
gineering in Canada and afterward in railroad con-
tract work in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky.
In 1859 he entered the service of the United States
Express Company, but resigned to enter the United
States Army in 1861. He first served as Major of
the Second Maryland Volunteers, then as Colonel of
the Third Regiment Maryland Volunteers. He
served under Gen. Banks in the campaign of 1862
and afterward became Colonel of the One Hundred
and Forty-third New-York, but illness forced him
to resign his commission. In 1865, after rendering
other services, he was commissioned Brevet Brig-
adier-General. After his retirement he re-entered
the service of the United States Express Com-
pany. He was married twice. His second wife
died two months ago.
