GEN. NEWBERRY DEAD.
Civil War General and Once Mayor
of Petersburg Passes Away.
Chicago, July 20.---Gen. Walter
Case Newberry, civil war general,
died today at his home here of
arterial schlerosis, after an illness of
eight weeks. He was 76 years old,
a native of Waterville, N.Y. He
enlisted as a private in the 81 St.
New York volunteer infantry and
later entered the cavalry.
After the war he lived in the South
for a number of years and was once
mayor of Petersburg, Va. Later he
built a reservoir at Richmond. Gen-
eral Newberry was a close friend of
General Pickett of the Confederate
army.
In 1876 he came to Chicago where
he became postmaster and later was
elected to Congress.
