Enlisted on September 20, 1861, as a Major, age 35.
He was commissioned into the U.S. Volunteers Aide-de-Camp.
He was Mustered Out on November 19, 1861.
On March 31, 1862, he was commissioned into the U.S. Volunteers Aide-de-Camp.
He was discharged for promotion on December 14, 1863.
He was commissioned into the Field & Staff of the 12th N.Y. Cavalry
He was Mustered Out on July 19, 1865, at Raleigh, NC.
Promotions: to Major, November 19, 1861 (Major & Aide-de-Camp to General Fremont);
to Lt. Colonel, March 31, 1862 (Lt. Colonel & Aide-de-Camp);
to Colonel, December 14, 1863 (12th N.Y. Cavalry) .
